On West Wittering Beach
23/05/2011

The ever-popular West Wittering Beach attracts 15,000 people on some summer Sundays.
Navigate continues to help the landowners maintain the image of the place. In 2011 the West Wittering beach café has enjoyed a rebranding programme, including signage, flags and menus. Navigate has also produced for the estate a free handout for visitors.
The Witterings is a great community story dating from 60 years ago when a group of local people heard that the then owners, the Church Commissioners, were talking about selling to Butlins and to the National Union of Miners for a holiday camp.
A group of 126 residents formed a company (The West Wittering Estate Limited) and bought the beach and surrounding land for £20,000 from the Church Commissioners. The company now has 300 members and shares are snapped up when they become available.
The company's original objectives remain:
A separate company formed by residents – the Cakeham Manor Estate Ltd – has acquired various tracts of land over time.
The whole area, including East Head (in the hands of the National Trust since 1984), is in the hands of the Chichester Harbour Conservancy.
Senior designer Neil Pafford, says: "The Navigate design studio is proud to have played its part in protecting and developing the image and brand of this beautiful section of the south coast.”
