Navigate is Sailing!
25/09/2011
Cruising has never been so popular, not only the realm of the elderly and the wealthy. The latest figures from PSA (Passenger Shipping Association) show that one in nine holidays is a cruise.
Navigate is helping to support Portsmouth International Port’s cruise business, promoting niche cruises and cruise operators whose ships fit the physical size of the port’s berths. More than 30 ships are scheduled to call in the next 12 months.
Recently profiled in the local and trade press were the arrivals of HM the Queen’s favourite ship, the Hebridean Princess, as well as the Fred. Olsen ship Boudicca whose winter programme starts from Portsmouth this year. More recently news of Hurtigruten’s Fram, an ice breaker which cruises in the Antarctic, has featured in the local press.
The cruise business is a long term plan for the Port and needs to grow this in a sustainable way, supported by new facilities in the newly opened terminal of this year. Cruise EXPO was held in the terminal earlier this year, promoting the Port and city attractions. The building of the cruise business is also important for the City of Portsmouth.
Portsmouth International Port’s Port Manager, Martin Putman, said: "More people than ever are choosing a cruise holiday because it offers such great value with meals, accommodation, entertainment and of course fantastic destinations all included within the price. We are delighted to welcome passengers to Portsmouth and hope they enjoy the facilities of our stunning new terminal building.”
