Navigate gives magazines a makeover
11/01/2011

The two Life Magazines for Petersfield and Haslemere have been published since 2006, and the publishing team decided it was time for a new and improved look. So they asked Dan Vear and his Navigate colleagues to give the award-winning and popular local titles a makeover.
First, Dan asked the Life Magazines' team to gather a set of other publications which they liked and to provide him with a selection of their favourite layouts.
The publishing team produced 10 different types of design, and Dan then sat down to work out a new layout, with fresh headline styles and text fonts. The design and publishing teams discussed the draft layouts, which were tweaked and refined.
The main changes were to the contents page, which has a sharper and smarter look; to the use of space; and to the fonts.
The style for headlines and body text is Utopia, while The Sans (a sans serif typeface) is used for sub heads and intros. "I have aimed to create a cleaner and fresher style," says Dan.
Aimee Plant, Life Magazines' Assistant Editor, says: "We are all thrilled with the new styles. They have brought the magazines up to date, and they are more stimulating and reader friendly."
The new designs were implemented in the February-March issue of Life in Haslemere, and will appear in the next issue of Life in Petersfield, due out at the end of February.
